Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Getting Started with Resonance
What to do from the convent flashback to the first island trial.
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is a single-player action-adventure from Asobo Studio and Focus Entertainment. It launched on 27 August 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Street price is $49.99 on PC and $59.99 on consoles. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass include it on day one, with Xbox Play Anywhere saves between those two stores.
You do not need to finish A Plague Tale: Innocence or Requiem first. The story is a prequel set in 1333–1334, fifteen years before Innocence. You play as Sophia, the Greek plunderer who later helps Amicia in Requiem. New players can follow the plot; series fans will notice Macula threads without being required to remember every rat swarm.
Platforms and setup
On PC, Steam lists full controller support and recommends a pad. Minimum spec is a GTX 1060 6GB or RX 5500 XT, 16 GB of RAM, and a 75 GB SSD. Recommended is an RTX 3060 Ti or RX 6700 XT for 1080p Ultra at 60 FPS. DirectX 12.1 and Shader Model 6.6 are required. Read the full table on system requirements before you download.
Bind the game once using the controls page. Attack, charged dagger, kick, dodge, and tap-parry / hold-block are the five inputs that matter. Interact is overloaded: squeeze gaps, crawl spaces, pick up bottles, throw knives, and slot the Minoan sphere all use the same button. That is intentional, not a bug.
The first hour
Chapter 1, Blood Ties, is a childhood sequence. Ezra runs a fake fight tutorial. Faro, Alec’s ally, appears in the cabin. A time skip then teaches parrying against Valerio. The first Relic of the Present, the Handled Cross, sits next to a body by a white branch. The first blade is the story-given Rusty Sword. There are no charm chests yet.
Chapter 2, Felons, is Venice. You learn aerial attacks, thrown bottles, and the grappling hook yank that dumps an archer off a ledge. The first Charm is a Bead in a chest after you squeeze through a fence. The first Bracelet sits after the archer yank. A chest on a wooden palette later hands you a device plus a necklace that grants five Resonance Points and opens the mastery trees. Do not sprint past that chest.
Chapter 3, Those Before Us, is the island shoreline. This is where loose Resonance Points appear as tokens on the ground. From here on, look down as often as you look at the objective marker. The walkthrough lists collectible counts per chapter so you know when a room is dry.
How combat actually works
Sophia dual-wields a sword and a dagger. Light attacks chain. Hold attack to charge a dagger finisher that spends the stagger you built with parries. Kick (Y on Xbox, Triangle on PlayStation) breaks guards and shoves bodies into walls or off ledges. Dodge is the only reliable answer to red unblockable swings until you buy the right mastery. Yellow attacks can be parried after an upgrade. Full details live in the combat guide.
Thrown knives and bottles are environmental, not an ammo wheel. Grab them during a fight, throw to stun, then continue the melee. The grappling hook pulls light enemies or creates traversal lines. Height still matters: jumping onto a target with attack is an instant kill, Uncharted-style.
Resonance Points without wasting them
Points drop after some encounters and sit in the world as pickups. The first skill costs five points. Each new skill costs five more. Mastery on a skill is a flat ten. There are six skills. Like a Warrior needs 165 of the 200 points in one playthrough. Chapter select does not bank extra points from later chapters back into an earlier reload.
A safe first spend is Echo’s Return if you like parries, or the extra dodge if you do not. Rank the rest on the skills and builds page. You can respec for free at any time in the skills menu, so experiment after Chapter 4 when kick and throw tools come online.
What to hunt besides the story
Charms come in six types and auto-equip. More of one type raises the proc chance. Beads help against archers. Arm Bands widen parry windows. Bracelets boost criticals. Trinkets can save a lethal hit. Pierced Coins (Theseus Echoes) can keep Focus from emptying. Seals are the sixth stack. Rank them on the charms tier list.
Blades hide in hero graves and each adds a technique, such as bleed on combo end or a piercing thrust. The Heritage Pack adds the Minoan Sword (Hero’s Blade) if you pre-ordered or bought that DLC. See blades and the Heritage Pack notes.
Artefacts split into Relics of the Present and Relics of the Past. They are lore first, trophy second. The collectibles page tracks all 37 plus the eight base blades and 30 charms.
Difficulty, accessibility, and pace
Difficulty is adjustable on the fly. Accessibility includes subtitle options, color alternatives, camera comfort, custom volumes, and play without timed input for some prompts. Steam Deck is listed as Playable, not Verified. A story run is about 11–15 hours; a collect-as-you-go run is closer to 20. Official FAQ copy said approximately 20 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Can I start Resonance without playing the earlier games?
Yes. Asobo pitched it as a standalone prequel. You will meet Sophia before she appears in Requiem, and the island story holds without the de Rune campaign.
Should I play on a controller?
Yes if you can. The developers recommend a pad. Parry timing and camera comfort are both easier on a controller than on mouse and keyboard.
When do skills unlock?
The necklace in Chapter 2 opens the trees. Ground tokens start in Chapter 3. Spend after you have felt a few group fights, then respec using the skills ranks if the first pick feels wrong.
Is anything missable?
Charms, blades, and artefacts can be grabbed later via chapter select. Resonance Points cannot. If you want Like a Warrior, follow the collectibles route in one run.
