Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Resonance Combat Guide
How to fight groups without the rat swarms from Innocence and Requiem.
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is built on melee. Asobo had not shipped a sword game before this one; the team cited Ghost of Tsushima, Sekiro, and Sifu, then tuned the difficulty down so stealth-series fans could still finish fights. You still lose if you treat it like Amicia’s sling. Sophia wants to be seen, to parry, and to throw people into each other.
This page is the how-to-play for combat. Bindings sit on controls. Spend order sits on skills and builds. Blade perks sit on blades. Charm procs sit on charms.
The melee loop
On Xbox: X is attack, hold X to charge a dagger critical, Y is kick, B is dodge, tap LB to parry, hold LB to block. PlayStation mirrors that on Square, Triangle, Circle, and L1. The charged dagger is not a spam tool. It is the payoff after you fill a stagger bar with timed parries.
Kick is the group-fight button. Boot a shielded enemy into a wall or into a friend. A stunned body eats a charged stab. Later, Bullbreaker Kick (double tap kick) adds a second hit that knocks people back. Environmental bottles and knives interrupt archers and break combos. They are not a separate loadout; pick them up mid-fight with interact and throw.
The grappling hook yanks light enemies off ledges or into you. Aerial attack (jump toward a target and press attack) is an instant kill and is tutorialized in Venice. Height is still a stealth-adjacent tool even though the rest of the game is not stealth.
Attack colors
White or uncolored swings are parry food. Yellow swings need a skill upgrade before a parry will catch them. Red swings are unblockable for most of the campaign; dodge is the answer. IGN’s tips video is explicit: dodging takes you off the target, parrying keeps you in stab range. Pick a bias and spend Resonance Points to match it. You can respec for free, so the bias is not a locked class.
Aegean Deflect is the parry-side pickup because it can double stagger damage on a return hit. Echo’s Return (press dodge as you are hit) grabs the attacker and bowls them into the pack. It will not catch yellow or red until upgraded. Heroic Surge, previewed before launch, grants a short shield after a charged kill. Kick masteries raise wall-stun. Dodge masteries add a second dodge or a spinning cut on the turn.
How fights are designed
Encounters are compact arenas, not open battlefields. Archers sit on edges. Shield men walk in first. After the midpoint, mixed packs include yellow and red attacks so you cannot parry on autopilot. TechRadar noted that a kill can restore a health segment, which rewards staying aggressive instead of kiting to a lantern.
Difficulty can be changed at any time. If a pack is teaching a new color, drop difficulty for that room rather than skipping the mechanic. The campaign is still only about a dozen hours of fighting; you do not need to git-gud for a platinum-style clear, but you do need to stop mashing.
Sophia’s tools around the sword
The Minoan sphere is mostly a puzzle lamp, but light still matters in hunt chapters. When the creature below the island is active, standing in light is survival. That is not a combat tree, but it is a fight-adjacent rule. Thrown knives are also the interact button, which is why the controls page exists: one input covers squeeze, inspect, throw, and sphere slot.
Blades change the end of a combo. Bleed, pierce, or a unique follow-up depend on which grave you looted. They are not full weapon classes. Equip the one whose perk matches the pack in front of you. Heritage Pack’s Minoan Sword is extra, not required. See Heritage Pack if you have it.
Exploration habits that feed combat
Resonance Points on the ground are easy to skip because they look like loot sparkles, not XP orbs. Chapter 3 onward, scan floors. Combat rewards also grant points after larger packs. You need 165 in one playthrough for Like a Warrior. That is a combat-adjacent trophy: missed tokens in Chapter 7 cannot be patched in from chapter select.
Charms stack while you explore. Beads make arrows miss, which is why they matter more than a third melee node if archers are killing you. Trinkets are the panic save. Rank pickups on the charms page so you know which chest type you are starving.
Common mistakes
Treating block-hold as a parry. Hold is damage reduction; tap is the stagger builder. Ignoring kick because the prompt is easy to skip. Dodging every white attack and never filling stagger. Spending all points on masteries of one skill so you have no tools for mixed packs. Reloading a chapter to “farm” points and wiping your later total.
If you came from Requiem looking for rats, you will not find them as a mechanic. Kotaku’s line is accurate: parries replace rats. Fight like a smuggler in a compact yard, not like a child in a wheat field, and the walkthrough rooms stop feeling like bullet sponges.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Can I skip melee and stealth through Resonance?
No. There is residual stealth (height kills, some hiding from the hunter), but the campaign is designed around group fights. Spend points, do not sneak the island.
What should I unlock first?
Parry players: Echo's Return, then Aegean Deflect. Dodge players: extra dodge first. Rank the rest on the skills page. Respec is free.
How do I deal with red attacks?
Dodge them until a mastery lets you interact with that color. Do not hold block. Kick after the dodge if the attacker is still in range.
Does difficulty affect trophies?
You can change difficulty whenever you want. Collectible trophies care about pickups and the 165-point single-run rule, not about a specific difficulty flag.
